In about 1 month I will begin my journey this summer where I will literally get to circumvent the globe. How many people get to do that? Believe me I know how fortunate I am to be able to have the opportunity to do this.
Starting in mid-June I will first be traveling to the Gambia to visit our program there. For those that don't know me, I guess I should mention that I currently serve as the Director of International Education at a liberal arts college in Maryland. I am extremely fortunate to be able to have a job that requires me to travel the world. It is definitely a perk, even if it is work.
In the Gambia, I will get to experience Africa for the first time. I can't wait. I will get to travel through most of the Gambia and experience all aspects of the country. How many even know where the Gambia is located? Not many do.
I will get to visit the students who have been on our campus, visit a monkey park, and participate in a drum performance. Nicest of all I will get to celebrate my birthday there. If I can't spend it at home with my family then that is the next best thing. I just hope I won't get eaten alive by mosquitoes! :)
From there I will be traveling to Sri Lanka. This will actually be my vacation for the year. I will have the awesome opportunity to work at an elephant orphanage there as well as possible teach English to local school children and experience the wonder of this island. I am probably most excited about this portion of my trip. I have no idea what to expect but it will be an adventure.
Finally, I will take short flight to southern India where I will meet up with some of my students who will be arriving the same day I am to begin their semester abroad. I will get to travel with them for the 1st week of their program and experience what they get to.
I have never been to any of these 3 countries so I am looking forward this awesome adventure. I will keep everyone posted here and hope to post lots of photos and maybe even a few videos.
If you have any recommendations for what I should see or tips feel free to comment. Or if you have questions about any of my adventures let me know.
My next blog will be on all the vaccinations and other preparations I have had to take to go to all of these countries. It has definitely already been an experience and I haven't even left the states!
