While most people have Skype, not many pay to have Skype credit. While abroad, having Skype credit can be very helpful, especially when you’re first starting out and may or may not have a phone plan or Wi-Fi on your phone. When I first arrived in my study abroad country, I had issues with my bankcards and wouldn’t have been able to call them using my cell phone. Skype credit came to my rescue and for 10 USD, I’ve been able to call my grandparents several times, call my bank, and call my parents to instruct them on how to use Skype video calling. It’s an inexpensive way to have a back-up plan.
